This policy explains what EP Companheiro collects, what it does with it, and
who else is involved when you use the app. It's written to be read, not just filed.
The short version
- We do not store the text of your translations, questions, or
lookups on our servers. It's processed to produce your result,
then it's gone from our side.
- Your history stays on your device. Nothing you translate
is uploaded to us for storage or synced between devices. You can clear it
any time in the app.
- We never use your text to train AI, and we don't sell
your data.
- To actually translate, your text is sent — over an encrypted connection —
to OpenAI, the AI provider that powers the app. That's the
one place your content goes outside your device.
- The only things we keep are your account (email + a
scrambled/hashed password) and anonymous usage counts (how
many requests you made and roughly how large), which we use to run the
service and keep costs sane.
Who we are
EP Companheiro ("the app", "we", "us") is operated by
Professor Caloiro Digital Products, based in Portugal.
Questions or requests about your data:
jimr@professorcdp.com.
What the app does
EP Companheiro translates between English and European Portuguese and offers
related learning tools (natural-phrasing suggestions, a language-and-culture
tutor, and a word/expression profiler). Some of these use a large language model,
which is why your text is sent to an AI provider to generate results.
What we collect, and why
1. Your account — the email address and password you create.
- Your password is stored only as a salted hash (PBKDF2). We
cannot see or recover your actual password; nobody at Professor Caloiro
Digital Products can read it.
- We use your account to sign you in and to grant access on all your devices.
2. Usage records (metadata only) — for each request, we store:
which account made it, which feature was used (e.g. "translate"), which AI model,
the number of tokens (a rough size measure), and the time.
- We do not store the text you enter, the images or documents you
send, or the results you receive. The usage record contains counts
and timestamps only.
- We use this to operate the service, prevent abuse, apply fair-use limits,
and understand overall cost — not to profile you.
3. Content you translate (not stored by us) — the text, photos,
or documents you submit are sent to our AI provider to produce your result
and are not written to our databases or logs. See "Who else is involved"
below.
4. On-device history (stays on your device) — the app keeps a
local history of your recent translations and lookups so you can revisit them. This
lives in the app's private storage on your device only; it is not
uploaded to us. You can erase it any time with Clear all in the
app, or by deleting the app.
We do not collect your contacts, location, or advertising
identifiers, and we do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
Who else is involved (subprocessors)
To provide the service, your request passes through two third parties:
- OpenAI — performs the translation/analysis. The text (and
any photo or document) you submit is sent to OpenAI to generate your result.
Per OpenAI's API terms, submissions are not used to
train their models, and are retained only for a limited period for
abuse monitoring before deletion. OpenAI is based in the United States. (See OpenAI's current API data-usage and retention terms for
the authoritative, up-to-date details.)
- Cloudflare — hosts our backend and carries the request in
transit. It acts as infrastructure and does not retain the content of your
requests for us.
All connections between the app, our backend, and OpenAI are encrypted in
transit (HTTPS/TLS). We do not sell or share your data with anyone for advertising,
and we have no other third-party recipients.
Payments
During the beta, the app is free. If and when paid plans launch, purchases will
be handled by Apple's App Store, Google Play, and/or RevenueCat.
Those providers process your payment; we do not receive or store your card
number.
Data retention
- Account data: kept while your account exists.
- Usage metadata: kept to run and cost-manage the service; not
tied to the content of what you translated.
- Your translated content: not retained by us at all (held
only transiently to produce your result, and briefly by OpenAI per their
terms).
- On-device history: retained on your device until you clear
it or remove the app.
How we protect your data
- Encrypted connections everywhere (HTTPS/TLS).
- Passwords stored only as salted hashes, never in plain text.
- The AI provider's key lives only on our server and is never placed in the
app.
- We do not log the content of your requests, by design.
No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep the amount of data we hold —
and therefore the amount at risk — as small as possible.
Your choices and rights
- See or delete your account data: email
jimr@professorcdp.com and we'll
provide or delete your account information. (Account
deletion is currently handled by request; a self-serve option may be added
later.)
- Clear your history: use Clear all in the
app, or delete the app.
- As we are based in the EU, the GDPR applies. Depending on where you live, you
may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, or object to certain
processing of your data. Contact us to exercise them.
Children
EP Companheiro is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your
country), and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy; we'll change the "Last updated" date above and, for
significant changes, notify you in the app.

How we compare to other translation tools
People switching from another translator often ask, reasonably, "is my
text more or less private here?" Here's a straight answer that sticks to
what we do — we encourage you to check any other service's
current policy yourself, since those can change.
What's true of EP Companheiro
- We don't store what you translate. Your queries and
results aren't saved on our servers; your history stays on your device.
- Your text is never used to train AI.
- To translate, your text is sent to a third-party AI provider
(OpenAI) over an encrypted connection, which processes it and, per
their API terms, doesn't train on it and keeps it only briefly. This
third-party step is what lets us offer more than plain translation — the
Context, Language & Culture, and Word Profile tools all rely on that
AI.
How to think about the trade-off
- Some free translators improve their models using the text people type in.
We don't — nothing you enter trains an AI, and we keep none
of it.
- Some paid, enterprise translators run their own engine
(your text goes to one company, not a third party) and back it with formal
certifications and contractual immediate-deletion. We don't run our
own engine — we rely on OpenAI — and we don't yet carry those
certifications. If single-vendor processing with audited guarantees is a hard
requirement for you, a certified enterprise service may fit better; for most
everyday use, "not stored, not trained on, encrypted" is the practical bar,
and we meet it.
The honest summary: we hold very little about you, we never train on
your text, and the one place your content travels is to the AI that produces your
result.
This section states our own practices only. We deliberately
don't quote other services' policies here, because they change — please compare
against their live, official terms.
